To make a day of it

Neues Schloss Waldthurn stands in Waldthurn (Landkreis Neustadt an der Waldnaab), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Neues Schloss Waldthurn stands on the site known as the 'Roter Garten', where Princess Auguste Sophie of Palatinate-Sulzbach had a summer residence built for the Lobkowicz family starting in 1666. The original square, three-storey building was replaced in a simplified form after a fire in 1865, and the structure now forms a two-storey complex with three wings around a courtyard. What stands out is the long succession of later uses, administrative and then parish-related, that turned this princely residence into a municipal building. In front of it, a fountain rebuilt in 1977 incorporates older lion-head fragments recalling the Lobkowicz coat of arms.

What to know

  • The building currently serves as a parish hall and civil wedding hall for the municipality, not as a museum open to visitors.
  • No opening hours or admission fees are set, since the building is used for municipal purposes rather than regular tourist visits.
  • The original interior was lost after the 1865 fire, so what can be seen today is the simplified rebuilt structure.
  • The Lobkowicz fountain in front of the building can be viewed freely from the public space.
  • The site is located in Waldthurn itself, in the Landkreis Neustadt an der Waldnaab, Bavaria.
