To make a day of it

Motte Gripekoven stands in Wegberg (Kreis Heinsberg), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Motte Gripekoven is what remains of an earth and timber fortification raised around 1200 by the lords of Gripekoven, in marshy ground within the Beeck district of Wegberg. A second, later site known as Neu-Gripekoven was built in stone in the early 14th century and destroyed after a siege in 1354. Both locations survive mainly as earthworks, ditches and mounds, rather than as structures open for a conventional visit.

What to know

  • The Alt-Gripekoven motte lies directly behind a private farm (In Gripekoven 9) and can only be seen with the owner's permission.
  • The Neu-Gripekoven site is now overgrown or used for farming, with only the scale of its former ditches still visible.
  • There are no opening hours or admission fees, as this is not a site set up for public visits.
  • Stone siege balls from the 1354 attack have been found in nearby fields over the decades, though none are displayed on site.
  • Any visit amounts to viewing earthworks and terrain rather than standing buildings.
