To make a day of it
Ludgerusburg stands in Coesfeld (Kreis Coesfeld), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 17th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Ludgerusburg was a star-shaped citadel built north of Coesfeld from 1655 onward, commissioned by the prince-bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen as his intended residence. Designed with bastions, ravelins and wide moats that could be flooded, the stronghold was largely torn down after the death of its last patron, the elector Maximilian Heinrich von Bayern, in 1688. Only scattered remains survive today within the town, including the ruined gatehouse near the municipal park and a surviving barrel-vaulted chamber that once served as a wine cellar. The former fortress grounds now host Coesfeld's cultural and sports facilities, and a marked trail links the remaining traces of the old ramparts.
