Standing at the center of Velen in the Münsterland region, Schloss Velen is a moated castle whose history goes back to the 13th century, when an earlier stronghold belonged to the lords of Velen. The present buildings reflect successive building phases from the Renaissance to the classicist period, before a fire destroyed the structure in 1931 and a faithful reconstruction followed from 1933. Owned by the von Landsberg-Velen family since the 18th century, the estate still preserves an orangery, a hunting lodge and a pheasant house within its park.
