To make a day of it
Barenborg stands in Rosendahl (Kreis Coesfeld), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.
The Barenborg is a medieval motte site in the village of Holtwick, part of the municipality of Rosendahl. What visitors find today is an archaeological earthwork rather than a standing building: a mound ringed by broad water-filled ditches, once part of a fortification guarding the old route between Ahaus and Coesfeld. No above-ground structure has survived, but the moat, rampart and approach causeway remain clearly traceable in the landscape. The area is also protected as a nature reserve, making a visit as much about wildlife as about history.
