To make a day of it

Kauzenburg stands in Bad Kreuznach (Landkreis Bad Kreuznach), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Kauzenburg stands above Bad Kreuznach on the Kauzenberg hill, on the site of the residence the counts of Sponheim built from the early 13th century onward. Destroyed by French forces at the end of the 17th century, it survives today as a ruin whose old walls were combined in the 1970s with a modern addition designed by architect Gottfried Böhm, using glass, metal and cubist-style bay windows. The historic vaulted cellars of the former castle remain and now house a restaurant, while the site also carries a regional broadcast transmitter.

What to know

  • The vaulted cellars of the former fortress can be visited as part of the on-site restaurant activity.
  • A broadcast transmitter stands on the site, which does not affect visits to the historic structure.
  • No opening hours, admission fees or accessibility details are known for visiting the historic monument itself.
