To make a day of it

Heidenburg stands in Gimmeldingen (Neustadt an der Weinstraße), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Heidenburg is the ruined remains of a circular rampart set on a rocky spur of the Palatinate Forest, above the Mußbach valley near Gimmeldingen. Believed to date from the Carolingian period, roughly the 9th or 10th century, it is thought to have served as a refuge fortification, taking advantage of a wide view over the Rhine plain below. Today only faint traces remain of the oval rampart and the square dwelling tower it once enclosed, along with a few dry-stone wall remnants near the former western gate. The neighbouring former quarry has since been converted into a climbing area.
