To make a day of it

Fürstbischöfliche Residenz stands in Freising (Freising), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 14th century. No visits are on record for this building.

The Fürstbischöfliche Residenz stands at the highest point of the Domberg in Freising, on the site from which the bishops and later prince-bishops of Freising once governed their temporal domain until Bavaria's secularization. The core of the building dates to the 14th century, though its present form chiefly reflects a rebuilding campaign carried out between 1607 and 1622. Visitors can still see the carved arcades made by Stephan Rottaler in the early 16th century, along with rooms decorated with stucco and panelling from the 17th and 18th centuries. The building now houses institutions of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, which shapes how much of it can actually be visited.

What to know

  • The building houses active church institutions, so only part of it can be visited.
  • The inner courtyard, with its early 16th century arcades, is occasionally used in summer for theatre performances and concerts.
  • The site adjoins the Diözesanmuseum Freising, housed in the former boys' seminary next door, which is visited separately.
  • The monument sits atop the Domberg hill above Freising's old town, meaning a walk uphill to reach it.
