To make a day of it

Friederikenberg stands in Zerbst/Anhalt (Landkreis Anhalt-Bitterfeld), in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Friederikenberg was once a pleasure palace built on the Hüttenberg hill, between Tochheim and Steckby near Badetz, dating from the time of the Principality of Anhalt-Zerbst. Of the former princely estate, only the old main gate remains standing, right beside the Elbe cycle path, while the former castle mound and traces of the old garden are now barely recognisable. It is less a building to tour than a marker along a riverside route.

What to know

  • Only the former main gate remains, visible from the Elbe cycle path (Elberadweg).
  • The site is best approached on foot or by bike, as part of a longer ride along the river.
  • There is no building left to tour inside, since the palace itself was torn down in the 19th century.
  • No opening hours or admission fees apply, as this is an open, freely accessible outdoor site.
  • The original grounds, the former mound and princely gardens, are now barely distinguishable in the landscape.
