To make a day of it

Burgwall Rothemühl stands in Rothemühl (Landkreis Vorpommern-Greifswald), in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burgwall Rothemühl is a former Slavic rampart stronghold sitting on a spur of the Brohmer Berge hills, right beside the L32 country road. Spanning twenty hectares across three sections, a small main fort flanked by two much larger outer baileys, it is the largest Slavic fortified site identified so far in Germany. In places the outer rampart runs as a double wall, an unusual feature for this kind of construction. What visitors see today are earthworks and ditch lines rather than standing buildings.

What to know

  • The site is open-air and set directly on the land, with no building or visitor center.
  • It is laid out in three parts: a small main fort and two larger outer baileys.
  • Visiting means walking across earthen ramparts and ditches, so the ground can be uneven.
  • The site runs right along the L32 road near Rothemühl.
  • No opening hours, fees or visitor facilities are indicated; access is free and unsupervised.
