To make a day of it

Rosenberg (Putzar) stands in Boldekow (Landkreis Vorpommern-Greifswald), in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Rosenberg at Putzar is what remains of a medieval motte, an artificial mound that once carried a fortified tower. The site lies at the edge of the landscaped park of Schloss Putzar, next to open pastureland. A gently sloped mound, roughly three metres high, is reached by a ramp some ten metres long leading up from the west. No standing structure survives today; only the shape of the earthwork marks the former stronghold.

What to know

  • This is an open-air archaeological site with no standing building or visible ruin.
  • The visit amounts to viewing the earthwork itself, the summit plateau measures about seven by six metres.
  • The site borders the park of Schloss Putzar and adjoining pastureland in a rural setting.
  • There are no opening hours or admission fees, as it is an outdoor site viewable from the surroundings.

Frequently asked

What remains of the Rosenberg at Putzar today?
Only the artificial mound of the motte survives, no walls or tower remain standing.
How old is this fortification?
It is not precisely dated, but this type of motte was typically built by German nobles settling in Pomerania during the 13th and 14th centuries.
Is the Rosenberg connected to the nearby Schloss Putzar?
The site lies near the Schloss Putzar park, and a 1306 record of a fortification under construction at Putzar is more likely linked to an earlier building of that castle.
Can visitors access the site freely?
It is an open outdoor area with no organised access, visible from the edges of the Schloss Putzar park.
