To make a day of it

Burgstall Purk (Moorenweis) stands in Moorenweis (Landkreis Fürstenfeldbruck), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burgstall Purk is the site of a vanished hilltop fortification above the hamlet of Purk, in the municipality of Moorenweis. No standing structure survives, but the earthworks and ditches forming a roughly square enclosure remain clearly traceable through the wooded hill. Excavations at the foot of the hill uncovered Roman-era remains, while the earthwork itself is thought to date from the early Middle Ages. It is best approached as a walk through an archaeological landscape rather than a conventional monument visit.

What to know

  • No building still stands; only ditches and earth ramparts in the woodland mark the former stronghold.
  • Access is on foot, up a wooded slope, with no paths or tourist signage prepared for visitors.
  • Two wooden crosses stand inside the enclosure, and an open-air mass is held there every 3 October.
  • The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany, which protects the archaeological ground itself.
  • There are no opening hours, admission fee, or visitor facilities on site.
