At Adelshofen in Bavaria, an archaeological site marks the location of a former moated Burg that no longer exists above ground. Founded in the Middle Ages by the lords of Adelshofen, it was replaced around 1700 by a baroque Schloss, which was itself torn down in 1835. Nothing of the original structures remains visible except the former Hofmark judge's house from the 17th and 18th centuries, now used as a residence.

What to know

  • No building of the original Burg or Schloss survives; only the archaeological trace of the site is protected.
  • The one old structure still standing, the former Hofmark judge's house, is a private residence and cannot be visited.
  • The site lies in the center of the village of Adelshofen, near St. Michael's church.
  • There are no opening hours, fees, or visitor facilities, since this is an archaeological ground site with no standing monument.
