To make a day of it

Burgstall Althegnenberg stands in Althegnenberg (Landkreis Fürstenfeldbruck), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burgstall Althegnenberg marks the site of a former motte castle, now vanished, on an artificial mound at the edge of Althegnenberg in the Landkreis Fürstenfeldbruck, Bavaria. Once ringed by a water-filled moat, the mound carried in the 12th and 13th centuries the seat of the lords of Hegnenberg, ministerials serving the Welf and later the Hohenstaufen dynasties. No masonry from this early stronghold survives: a chapel, the Bergkapelle, now stands on top of the hill. Visitors come less for standing remains than for the earthwork itself, a trace of a medieval fortified settlement.

What to know

  • No walls or towers remain visible: only the shape of the motte, topped by the Bergkapelle chapel, marks the former stronghold.
  • The site is outdoors, on a mound at the edge of the village, with no set hours or admission fee.
  • A visit amounts to viewing the mound and the chapel from outside.
  • The Burgstall is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
  • The lords of Hegnenberg left this site around 1300 for Burg Hofhegnenberg, four kilometres away.
