On a rocky plateau just west of Waischenfeld stand the remains of a stronghold whose origins trace back to the 12th century. Of what was once an extensive complex, little remains beyond a round Romanesque tower some 13 metres high, perched on a limestone outcrop and now the symbol of the town. Known locally as the Steinerner Beutel, this tower stood at the northern end of the fortress and originally served as a watchtower with a raised entrance.
