The Burg Breitenstein stands on a rocky spur some 612 metres high above the hamlet of Breitenstein, part of the municipality of Königstein. Built around 1100 by the lords of Breitenstein, it gradually fell into disuse after that family died out in 1666 and was later quarried for stone in the 18th century. What survives today is mainly a two storey Romanesque double chapel, the only one of its kind in the Upper Palatinate, along with scattered remains of the outer bailey and the curtain wall.
