To make a day of it

Bürglischloss stands in Gailingen am Hochrhein (Landkreis Konstanz), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Bürglischloss is the ruin of a spur castle perched at 565 metres above sea level on a promontory of the Rauhenberg hill north of Gailingen am Hochrhein. Built before 1278 by the lords of Gailingen as their ancestral seat, the site had long been hidden beneath vegetation until the winter storms of 1999 and 2000 felled the trees and revealed its earthworks once more. Visitors can still trace the two platforms of the former stronghold, divided by a neck ditch over fourteen metres wide, along with remains of an outer ditch and what may have been a residential building. A wooden observation tower, erected in 1998, offers views as far as Vorarlberg and the Bernese Alps on clear days.

What to know

  • The site is an open-air ruin with no roofed building or organised guided tour.
  • The easiest access is from the car park of the neurological rehabilitation hospital east of the site.
  • The terrain includes ditches and steep slopes, so sturdy walking shoes are advisable.
  • The wooden observation tower offers views over the Upper Rhine plain and, on clear days, as far as the Alps.
  • There are no set opening hours or fees since this is a freely accessible outdoor site.
