To make a day of it

Bürgle (Enkenstein) stands in Enkenstein (Landkreis Lörrach), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Bürgle, also known as Burg Enkenstein, marks the site of a former spur castle near Enkenstein, in the Landkreis Lörrach, Baden-Württemberg. Set on a wooded hilltop above the hamlet, the plateau today shows little more than a partly filled-in ditch and a few fragments of worked stone uncovered during a 2007 survey. No founding date or builder is documented, and although the place name Enkenstein is linked to the castle, no noble family of that name has ever been confirmed. Visitors come mainly for the forest walk and the sense of a vanished medieval past rather than for any standing remains.

What to know

  • This is not a restored castle but the site of a vanished ruin, with no standing structure to see.
  • Access is on foot via a forest track off the road between Enkenstein and Hausen im Wiesental.
  • There are no opening hours or fees, as the site lies freely accessible in open woodland.
  • The terrain is sloped and wooded, so sturdy walking shoes are advisable.
  • There is no visitor infrastructure on site, no signage or facilities.
