Burg Wildenau stands on a rocky rise in the village of Wildenau, part of the market town of Plößberg in Bavaria's Upper Palatinate region. Founded around 1100 by the Counts of Sulzbach and first documented in 1125, it was destroyed during the Hussite Wars around 1430 and subsequently rebuilt. Among its notable features are a keep dating from the Hohenstaufen era, built in bossed ashlar masonry, and an old chapel shared by both Christian denominations from 1650 to 1908. Bought by a private couple in 1992, the castle underwent a decade-long restoration and remains privately owned today.
