To make a day of it

Burg Wachenheim stands in Wachenheim (Landkreis Alzey-Worms), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Wachenheim, also known as Oberburg Wachenheim or, today, Schlossgut Lüll, stands at the centre of the village of Wachenheim in the Zellertal, Rhineland-Palatinate. Its Gothic keep, built around 1470-1480, rises well above the surrounding rooftops and ranks among the tallest of its kind in the Rheinhessen region. The complex, first documented in an earlier form in 1324, was later altered and extended into the early twentieth century, including a neo-Gothic building added in 1901. The site should not be confused with the Wachenburg or with Schloss Wachenheim further south on the Weinstraße.

What to know

  • Burg Wachenheim is privately owned, today known as Schlossgut Lüll, which limits access to the interior of the buildings.
  • The fifteenth-century Gothic keep and the fourteenth- to sixteenth-century enclosure wall around the park can be seen from outside and from the village.
  • The site is often confused with the Wachenburg or with Schloss Wachenheim an der Weinstraße, both of which are separate locations.
  • A seasonal stop of the Zellertalbahn, a tourist railway running on Sundays and public holidays, serves nearby Wachenheim-Mölsheim.
  • The castle is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
