To make a day of it

Burg Vehlefanz stands in Vehlefanz (Landkreis Oberhavel), in Brandenburg, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Vehlefanz survives only as the ruin of a tower and a short stretch of brick wall, set on an artificial mound over seven metres high that once carried a 14th-century moated castle. The main interest today is the earthwork itself: a mound with a base diameter of 62 metres and a flat top of 39 metres, a rare type of motte castle for this region. The surrounding moat, once about seven metres wide, was filled in almost completely in 1897. It is a place for a historical walk rather than a site with standing buildings.

What to know

  • Only a ruined tower and a fragment of wall remain, there is no intact building to tour.
  • The site is best explored from the outside, walking around and up the mound.
  • The ground is uneven and the mound rises more than seven metres.
  • The site is listed as a Baudenkmal.
  • No set opening hours or admission fee apply, as it is an open outdoor site.
