To make a day of it
Burg und Schloss Staufen stands in Markt Oberstaufen (Landkreis Oberallgäu), in Bavaria, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.
The Burg and later Schloss Staufen stood on a hill above what is now Markt Oberstaufen in Bavaria. Likely founded by the knights of Schellenberg, it passed to the counts of Montfort in the early 14th century and was destroyed during the Peasants' War of 1525. Rebuilt as a schloss five years later, it later belonged to the Königsegg-Rothenfels family and changed sovereignty several times before being torn down in 1807. No original structure remains on the site today.
What to know
- The historic castle building itself disappeared in 1807, so there is no medieval structure left to visit on site.
- The site later housed a festival hall, then a clinic; after the clinic's demolition in 2020, a hotel project echoing the old castle's layout was planned for the location.
- No opening hours, admission fees or access conditions apply, as this is not a monument open to the public.
- The southern inner courtyard of the site offers views of the Allgäu Nagelfluh mountain chains.
- The place's history survives mainly through local tradition, including the town flag procession kept alive in Oberstaufen since the 17th century.
