To make a day of it

Burg Schweinhausen stands in Hochdorf (Landkreis Biberach), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Schweinhausen was once a hilltop stronghold overlooking the Riß valley, near the hamlet of Berg in Hochdorf. Built in the 11th century by the lords of Schweinhausen, it later changed hands among several noble families before being destroyed in 1525 and dismantled in 1609. All that remains today is a striking defensive ditch, up to twelve metres deep, while the site where the castle once stood is now privately owned and used as pasture, ringed by trees. The place is remembered for an unusual episode: King Philip of Swabia is said to have spent his honeymoon with Irene of Byzantium there in 1197.

What to know

  • No standing remains of the castle survive, only a large defensive ditch still marks the site.
  • The land where the castle once stood is privately owned and used as pasture, so visitors should approach with care and respect.
  • The site lies on an isolated spur near the hamlet of Berg, away from the centre of Hochdorf, and requires walking through open countryside.
  • There are no opening hours, fees or visitor facilities, as this is not managed as a site open to the public.
