Burg Reineberg stands in Lübbecke (Kreis Minden-Lübbecke), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.
Burg Reineberg once crowned the summit of the Reineberg, the highest point of the Wiehengebirge south of Lübbecke, serving the bishops of Minden as a stronghold against the bishops of Osnabrück and the counts of Tecklenburg. The long disputed fortress was torn down in 1723 on the order of the Prussian king Frederick William I because it had fallen into disrepair, and all that survives today is its moat, 310 metres long and 15 to 22 metres wide. A visit here is essentially an encounter with an archaeological trace in the woods, of interest to anyone drawn to the history of power struggles among the ecclesiastical principalities of Westphalia.
What to know
- No building survives, only the outline of the fortified moat remains visible at the summit of the Reineberg.
- The site sits in woodland on a hilltop, so reaching it involves a walk and some elevation gain.
- There are no set opening hours or admission fees, since this is an open-air ruin rather than a managed monument.
- The Reineberg name also survives as a place name in the neighbouring municipality of Hüllhorst, which bears an image of the castle on its coat of arms.
