To make a day of it

Burg Reifenberg stands in Oberreifenberg (Hochtaunuskreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burg Reifenberg stands above the village of Oberreifenberg on a Taunus ridge rising to 626 metres. Only a 14th century residential tower and shield wall survive, along with an older keep and a few scattered remains, yet the ruin still cuts an imposing figure. The site recalls the feuds waged by the lords of Reiffenberg against neighbours such as Kronberg, Falkenstein and the city of Frankfurt, before the stronghold was finally destroyed during the War of the Palatine Succession in 1689.

What to know

  • The grounds of the ruin are open to the public at all times, without ticket or gate.
  • The residential tower, about 24 metres tall, is open only on weekends from spring to autumn.
  • A narrow stone spiral staircase leads up to a viewing platform at 21 metres, looking out over Oberreifenberg and the Großer Feldberg.
  • The Burgverein Reifenberg association hosts festivals and concerts and is working toward setting up a museum on site.
  • Reaching the ruin from the village involves some uphill walking.
