Burg Reichenstein rises above the old town of Neckargemünd on the Hollmuth hill, east of the Elsenz river. Built as an imperial stronghold in the early 13th century to watch over the Neckar valley against the Wittelsbach lands, it now shows little more than a single stretch of original wall on its southern side, the rest of the visible masonry dating from 19th and 20th century rebuilding and restoration work. The grounds, now laid out as a small park-like woodland, give hardly any sense of the strategic position the castle once held, since nearby modern development has changed the surroundings.
