To make a day of it

Burg Poppenburg stands in Nordstemmen (Landkreis Hildesheim), in Lower Saxony, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Poppenburg stands above the Leine river in Nordstemmen, Lower Saxony, on a site that once guarded a key trade route between Minden and Hildesheim. Its origins are undated, but it was held by the noble Poppenburg family before passing to the Bishopric of Hildesheim, which expanded and fortified it during the 13th and 14th centuries. Visitors can see a substantial 14th-century residential tower, a living wing reshaped across several building phases, and a Baroque gateway bearing the coat of arms of a Bavarian elector. The former brewhouse on the grounds was converted into a Catholic church in the late 18th century.

What to know

  • No verified information is available on opening hours, admission fees or visit duration.
  • The castle lies beside the federal road B1, easily visible above the Leine valley.
  • The former castle chapel, now Catholic, still serves as a parish church for the surrounding villages.
  • The original keep and south gatehouse no longer survive, having been demolished in the late 18th century.
