Augustinerchorherrenstift Wittenburg stands in Elze (Landkreis Hildesheim), in Lower Saxony, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The former Augustinian canons' monastery of Wittenburg stands on the Klosterberg, the southern tip of the Finie ridge, on the site of a medieval stronghold that gave the place its name. Founded in 1328, the monastery declined from the 16th century onward and later became an administrative seat and then an estate. What survives today is chiefly the large Gothic church of 1497, built of rendered rubble stone and divided in two by a rood screen, along with the ruin of a farm building and remnants of the monastery wall. The eastern half of the church, once reserved for the monks, has served as the local parish church since 1590, while the western half, long used as a barn and storeroom, has hosted concerts and exhibitions since 2003.
What to know
- No standing remains of the original stronghold survive; only the levelled terrain and fragments of the enclosure wall trace its former extent.
- The Gothic church is visited in two distinct parts, the still-consecrated eastern choir and the western nave, now used as a cultural venue.
- The western half of the church hosts concerts and exhibitions, which may affect access depending on the schedule.
- No verified information is available on opening hours, fees, or access conditions, so it is advisable to check locally before visiting.
