To make a day of it

Burg Osten stands in Kruckow (Landkreis Vorpommern-Greifswald), in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Osten is the ruin of a lowland castle in the Tollense valley, near Schmarsow, on the territory of the municipality of Kruckow. Probably built in the early 13th century, it once guarded a river crossing and a toll point on the then-navigable Tollense. Visitors can still make out the outer bailey, a rectangular plateau with substantial masonry remains, separated by a water-filled moat from the main castle area, where only tower foundations survive. Long associated with the powerful von Maltzahn family, the site lost much of its original earthworks during river straightening works in 1969.

What to know

  • The site is an open-air ruin with no building to enter and no visitor facilities.
  • The wooden boardwalks installed in the 1990s have since deteriorated and are difficult to walk on.
  • The ground is damp and crossed by water-filled ditches, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
  • There are no set opening hours or admission fees, as the site is freely accessible outdoors.
  • The ruin lies in open countryside, away from amenities, near the road between Schmarsow and Roidin.
