Burg Neu-Wolfskehlen stands in Riedstadt (Landkreis Groß-Gerau), in Hesse, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.
Burg Neu-Wolfskehlen was a medieval lowland castle whose exact location remained unknown until 2014, when archaeological surveys finally pinpointed it in the Wolfskehlen district of Riedstadt. Built around the start of the 13th century by younger sons of the Wolfskehlen family, it was apparently destroyed as early as 1301 during a conflict between the Archbishopric of Mainz and King Albrecht. Nothing stands above ground today: the site is a damp meadow where geophysical surveys revealed the buried outline of a square enclosure, a keep and surrounding ditches. It is a destination for those interested in castle archaeology rather than in visiting a standing building.
What to know
- No visible structure remains on site, as the castle's traces lie buried beneath a meadow.
- The location lies near the street In der Hochstadt, at the southeastern edge of the Wolfskehlen district.
- Everything known about the fortress comes from ground-penetrating radar and geomagnetic surveys carried out between 2014 and 2017.
- There are no opening hours, fees or visitor facilities, since this is not a site set up for touring.
- As the ground is a damp meadow, visitors should expect wet or uneven terrain.
