To make a day of it

Jagdschloss Louisburg Griesheim stands in Darmstadt, in Hesse, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Jagdschloss Louisburg Griesheim no longer stands: this hunting lodge once rose at the edge of the Griesheim forest, between Darmstadt and Griesheim, on a site now crossed by the A5 motorway. A first building, erected in 1713 for Landgrave Ernst Ludwig, collapsed in 1736; a second baroque structure, built in 1740 for his son Ludwig VIII and named Louisbourg, was torn down some thirty years later. Nothing remains on site apart from historic drawings kept in archives and a few eighteenth-century paintings.

What to know

  • The building disappeared by the late 18th century, so there is nothing on site to visit.
  • The former location lies near the Darmstädter Kreuz, now crossed by the A5 motorway.
  • No structure, ruin or original pavilion remains accessible to walkers.
  • The only surviving records are 18th-century drawings kept at the Hessian State Archives in Darmstadt and two period paintings.
