To make a day of it
Burg Mühlhausen/Thüringen stands in Mühlhausen/Thüringen (Unstrut-Hainich-Kreis), in Thuringia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.
The Burg Mühlhausen/Thüringen no longer exists: this stronghold once stood on the site of today's bus station in Mühlhausen/Thüringen, in the Unstrut-Hainich-Kreis. First recorded in the early Middle Ages as a seat of Ottonian kings and later the Staufer dynasty, it was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt before vanishing for good after a final medieval destruction. No archaeological traces have been found, as the area was heavily redeveloped, though street names and two former gates still mark its former outline.
What to know
- No visible building of the former stronghold remains today.
- The site now corresponds to the bus station of Mühlhausen/Thüringen, in the town centre.
- Street names and the line of two former gates allow the rough location of the vanished fortress to be traced.
- A visit is therefore limited to a walk through the neighbourhood, without an actual monument to see.
