To make a day of it

Burg Lauenstein (Ith) stands in Salzhemmendorf (Landkreis Hameln-Pyrmont), in Lower Saxony, Germany. Recorded dating: 13th century. No visits are on record for this building.

On an isolated hill overlooking the village of Lauenstein, at the edge of Lower Saxony's Ith ridge, the remains of a medieval stronghold can still be found. The barons of Homburg had it raised during the 13th century, though it ceased to serve any military function by the 1500s and was eventually dismantled in the early 1800s. A corner of the old hall, the vaulted gate passage leading into the courtyard, sections of thick rubble walls, and a 19th century lookout tower perched at the highest point are among the remnants still visible today.
