To make a day of it

Burg Langensteinbach stands in Langensteinbach (Landkreis Karlsruhe), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Langensteinbach, also known as the Römerturm, survives only as the stump of a residential tower on a hill south of the village of Langensteinbach, part of the town of Karlsbad. Built around 1100 as a free standing tower keep, it was partly destroyed by fire and rebuilt before being abandoned by the 13th century. What remains today is the restored lower section of the tower together with the surrounding ditch and rampart. The ruins of the later St. Barbara chapel stand close by.

What to know

  • This is an open-air ruin site, with no intact building to visit.
  • The dating of the site, from around 1100 to the 13th century, is based on pottery fragments found during excavations in the 1970s.
  • The ruined St. Barbara chapel stands right next to it and can be seen on the same visit.
  • The site sits on a hill, so some walking is needed to reach it.
