Burg Kakesbeck stands at Lüdinghausen, surrounded by an extensive moat system fed by the Stever river. It is the oldest of the town's three surviving moated castles, with foundations dated by dendrochronology to the year 830. The present complex, made up of a core castle and an outer bailey, consists mainly of buildings from the 14th to 16th centuries, built of Baumberg sandstone and brick. A thirty-metre keep, a half-timbered building relocated from Lippstadt, and a rebuilt ecumenical chapel are among the features visible today.
