To make a day of it
Burg Hundheim stands in Neckarhausen (Landkreis Bergstraße), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.
Burg Hundheim marks the site of a vanished hilltop castle, its original name unknown, set on a rocky spur above the Neckar near Neckarhausen. Archaeological excavations in 2004 dated its construction to the second third of the 11th century, making it possibly the oldest known fortification in the lower Neckar valley. What remains today are buried traces in the forest, hard to make out without expert knowledge: an octagonal residential tower and the remains of a hall building added around 1100. The land belongs to a church foundation and can only be reached on foot, with no visitor facilities on site.
What to know
- The site can only be reached on foot, from Neckarhausen or Lanzenbach.
- The remains are buried and faint: this is not a rebuilt or restored castle open for touring.
- The forested land belongs to a private church foundation (Evangelische Pflege Schönau).
- The site is protected as an archaeological monument (Bodendenkmal): excavation or collecting finds requires a permit, and chance discoveries must be reported.
- There are no opening hours, fees, or visitor facilities on site.
