The Burg Hohenberg stands in ruins above the valley of the Eger, perched on a rocky outcrop 125 metres over the river at the edge of the town centre of Hohenberg an der Eger. Built during the Hohenstaufen period between 1170 and 1220 to guard the strategic route into Bohemia, it later served the burgraves of Nuremberg and the margraves of Brandenburg-Kulmbach-Bayreuth. Visitors today can see the fortified 15th-century curtain wall, its round artillery towers, the gate tower, the square prison tower and the Fürstenhaus, built in 1666 as a hunting lodge. Parts of the complex, including the outer bailey, were destroyed in 1945 and only partly rebuilt afterwards.
