To make a day of it
Burgstall Neudürrlas stands in Thierstein (Landkreis Wunsiedel i. Fichtelgebirge), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.
The Burgstall Neudürrlas marks the site of a 12th century motte castle, now vanished, near the hamlet of Neudürrlas, part of Thierstein. A horseshoe shaped ditch still encircles the inner plateau, with a steep slope providing natural protection on one side. The site is now covered in forest, with no standing structures, though hollows in the ground mark where buildings once stood. Locally the place is called Schwedenschanze, a name that wrongly links it to the Thirty Years' War.
What to know
- This is not a castle open for guided visits but a freely accessible outdoor archaeological site.
- The entrance lies along the path connecting Neudürrlas to Altdürrlas, south of the hamlet.
- The wooded, uneven ground calls for sturdy footwear to explore the ditch and inner plateau.
- No buildings or reconstructions remain on site, only the shape of the ditch and some ground hollows hint at the former settlement.
- The site is sometimes called Schwedenschanze, though this name has no proven connection to the Thirty Years' War.
