To make a day of it

Burg Heßberg stands in Veilsdorf (Landkreis Hildburghausen), in Thuringia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Heßberg Castle no longer stands: it was a medieval lowland stronghold on the right bank of the Werra, east of the present town of Hildburghausen in Thuringia. For centuries it served as the ancestral seat of the noble von Heßberg family, whose name survives to this day. The building was torn down between 1817 and 1819 on the orders of Carl von Hessberg, and the reclaimed materials were used to build a manor house, the so called Herrenhaus, on the same plot, which was itself demolished in 1948 during the Soviet occupation. Only scant wall remains have been identified today, found beneath a former school building and west of the church in Veilsdorf.
