To make a day of it

Burg Hatzfeld stands in Hatzfeld (Landkreis Waldeck-Frankenberg), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burg Hatzfeld stands in ruins above the Eder valley, on a rocky spur overlooking the town of Hatzfeld in Hesse. Built in the 13th century by the lords of Hatzfeldt, whose ancestral seat it was, the castle began to decay as early as the 16th century, and further demolitions in the 19th century reduced it further still. Since 1991, a local heritage association has been gradually clearing and stabilising the remaining structures, which remain the property of the von Hatzfeldt family to this day. Visitors can trace the remains of a shared residence once divided among several branches of the same family, a situation that led to a series of cohabitation agreements between the 14th and 16th centuries.
