To make a day of it

Burg Hardenberg stands in Velbert (Kreis Mettmann), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Hardenberg, known locally as the Alte Burg, is a ruined hilltop castle on a rocky spur rising to 247 metres, between the districts of Neviges and Tönisheide in Velbert. Built in the 11th or 12th century, it was the ancestral seat of the lords of Hardenberg until it burned down in the 13th century and was eventually abandoned. Today only a mound and surrounding ditches remain visible, though excavations uncovered traces of a square keep and several dwellings. A local legend claims a secret tunnel links it to the nearby Schloss Hardenberg, about 600 metres away, but no archaeological evidence supports this.
