To make a day of it
Burg Hachen stands in Sundern (Hochsauerlandkreis), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Hachen is a ruined hilltop castle overlooking the village of Hachen, part of Sundern, in the Hochsauerlandkreis. Founded around the year 1000, it passed through the hands of several prominent Rhenish and Westphalian families before becoming, in 1371, the widow's seat of the last Countess of Arnsberg. Visitors can still make out the remains of a two-metre-thick shield wall and traces of a round tower that once guarded the site's exposed northern side. Since 2019, the hill and ruins have formed a nature reserve, home to a distinctive population of molluscs typical of such ruined sites.
What to know
- The site is an open-air ruin, with no reconstructed buildings or museum trail.
- Reaching it involves a climb up the hill above Hachen, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
- Since 2019 the site has been part of a nature reserve protecting, among other things, a population of molluscs, which may limit certain activities.
- Events can be held there as long as they do not conflict with the nature reserve's protection aims.
- The precise building history remains poorly documented, with excavations in 1923 and again from 1978 to 1980 the main sources on its layout.
