To make a day of it
Burg Eberbach stands in Eberbach (Rhein-Neckar-Kreis), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Eberbach rises above the town of Eberbach on a rocky spur in the Rhein-Neckar-Kreis, in Baden-Württemberg, about 160 metres above the Neckar river. It is in fact not one castle but three separate fortifications, known as Vorderburg, Mittelburg and Hinterburg, built at different times between the late 12th and the second quarter of the 13th century, with no structural connection between them. Left to decay after being dismantled in the 15th century, the three complexes were partly uncovered and restored through excavations in the early 20th century and again in the 1960s. The site, which today has no commercial facilities, offers wide views over the town and the Neckar valley.
What to know
- The site consists of three separate ruins with no direct connection between them.
- Access is on foot, either about 20 minutes from a forest car park on the L524 road or about 45 minutes from Eberbach town centre along a marked hiking trail.
- The terrain is steep and uneven, so a reasonable level of fitness and sturdy footwear are advisable.
- There are no commercial facilities on site, such as a shop or refreshments.
- The visit takes place entirely outdoors, so it is affected by weather and season.
