To make a day of it

Burg Dernbach stands in Dernbach (Westerwaldkreis), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Dernbach stands at the edge of the village of Dernbach, in the Westerwald region. The complex seen today largely dates from a rebuilding carried out between 1812 and 1815, though two round towers and the old residential wing on the south side still recall the high medieval stronghold raised around 1200. Extensive restoration work has kept the ensemble in a well preserved condition.

What to know

  • The site has been privately owned since 1936, which limits access to the interior.
  • Visible medieval remains are limited to two round towers and the old residential building, the rest of the complex dating from the 19th century.
  • A chapel that once stood near the site was demolished in 1901, and its historic furnishings, including the well known Dernbach Lamentation group, are now kept at the diocesan museum in Limburg.
  • No opening hours or admission fees are available for this site.
