Burg Brandenstein stands on a wooded ridge east of Schlüchtern, overlooking the Kinzig valley from a 325-metre spur. Founded after 1243 by a branch of the lords of Steckelberg, it was enlarged as an administrative seat by the counts of Hanau and later rebuilt as a Renaissance residence after 1540. The site now houses a museum of traditional wooden implements in the former stable, along with a collection devoted to the physician and Japan explorer Philipp Franz von Siebold, an ancestor of the present owners.
