To make a day of it

Burg Bommersheim stands in Bommersheim (Hochtaunuskreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Bommersheim is not a standing castle but the archaeological remains of a former motte, uncovered through excavations carried out since 1988 in the Bommersheim district of Oberursel. The buried evidence traces two building phases: an early timber stronghold from the 11th or 12th century, replaced in the 13th century by a stone enclosure once the original mound proved too small. The waterlogged moat preserved an unusually rich set of medieval finds, pottery, leather goods, jewellery and weapons, now held at the Vortaunusmuseum in Oberursel. What visitors find on site, behind the church of St Aureus and Justina, are the traces of the moat and foundations rather than any upstanding building.

What to know

  • No standing building remains; only foundation and moat traces are visible at ground level.
  • The site lies behind the church of St Aureus and Justina, in the Bommersheim district of Oberursel.
  • Finds from the excavations, pottery, leather, jewellery and weapons, are displayed at the Vortaunusmuseum in Oberursel rather than on site.
  • The grounds and surrounding archaeological remains are protected as a Kulturdenkmal in Hesse, meaning any digging or collecting requires authorisation.
  • As no opening hours, fees or access details are documented, it is worth checking locally before visiting.
