Burg Berneck stands on a rocky spur between the Köllbach and Bruderbach valleys, above the Berneck district of Altensteig, in the Landkreis Calw, Baden-Württemberg. Built between 1050 and 1100 by the Lords of Berneck, it belongs to the type of shield-wall castles, dominated by a keep built of rusticated ashlar stone. The original shield wall, about 38 metres high and 3.3 metres thick at its base, remains visible from a distance and is the most striking feature of the site. The current neo-Gothic residential buildings date from a reconstruction carried out in 1846 and 1847 following a fire.
