To make a day of it

Burg Althornberg stands in Triberg im Schwarzwald (Schwarzwald-Baar-Kreis), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Althornberg is a ruined hilltop castle standing at 786 metres above sea level, on a steep rocky spur overlooking the Gutach valley opposite the hamlet of Niederwasser. Built around 1100 by Adalbert von Ellerbach, it later belonged to the lords of Hornberg, then of Triberg, before passing to the counts of Hohenberg and the Habsburgs. The castle burned down between 1430 and 1440, was still occupied by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War, and was set alight again afterwards. What survives today are beam sockets, a cistern and a chamber hewn into the rock.
