To make a day of it

Bodendenkmal in Offenhausen (Mittelfranken), #D-5-6534-0111 stands in Offenhausen (Landkreis Nürnberger Land), in Bavaria, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

This site marks the location of a former medieval motte, on the eastern edge of the hamlet of Mittelhof, part of the municipality of Offenhausen. The circular mound, still clearly visible in the late 1950s with its surrounding ditch, was substantially damaged after 1959 by the construction of a house and road works. Historians have sometimes linked it to an outlying watch post for the nearby Burg Hohenkuchen, about 650 metres to the east, though no archaeological evidence confirms its occupation or whether it was built in timber or stone.

What to know

  • This is not a developed visitor site but a ground feature that is now barely noticeable.
  • Modern buildings and the adjacent road have erased much of the mound's original shape.
  • No standing structure, medieval or reconstructed, remains visible on site.
  • The location sits at the edge of the hamlet of Mittelhof, close to private houses.
  • Its suggested link to the nearby Burg Hohenkuchen remains a hypothesis rather than a documented fact.
