To make a day of it

Asselburg stands in Burgdorf (Landkreis Wolfenbüttel), in Lower Saxony, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Asselburg refers to the remains of a medieval stronghold perched at the tip of a rocky spur west of Hohenassel, now a district of Burgdorf. What survives is a curved earthwork of ramparts and ditch stretching roughly 130 metres, while steep slopes once shielded the other sides of the site. Its interest lies chiefly in its early medieval history and political significance rather than in visible remains today. Just to the north of the old fortified site stands a manor house built from the late 18th century onward, now known as Schloss Burgdorf.

What to know

  • This is not a visitable castle building but an open-air archaeological site, reduced to earthworks and a ditch.
  • There is no visitor infrastructure, opening hours or admission fee for this location.
  • Reaching the site involves walking outdoors up to the spur where the fortification once stood.
  • The nearby Schloss Burgdorf, built later, is a separate and privately owned building, not to be confused with the old Asselburg.
